Routine Health Information Systems that operates in Tanzania Mainland

The paper will give general introduction of existing routine systems in Tanzania. Mainly are Vital Registration, Health Management Information System (HMIS) and Adult Mortality and Morbidity Project (AMMP). Also, it will look at the general strength and weaknesses for each system by examining the methodology employed in data collection. However, more emphasis will be on the HMIS and AMMP.

Health Management Information System and AMMP are two systems which operate under the umbrella of the Ministry of Health through Directorate of Policy

and Planning. Basically it support each other rather than having conflicting results.

Health Management Information System is a routine reporting system that covers all health facilities in Tanzania. This system has been in place since 1993 when it was introduced in one of the regions in Tanzania. The system was put in place to support management of health delivery system at all levels in the country. The main target is to support health sector reforms currently being undertaken by the government. That is why the system was designed to be decentralized, integrated, and effective. Since its inception, two major reviews were conducted in trying to improve its performance.

The Adult Morbidity Project is a project of the United Republic of Tanzania funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID). This project collect community based information through Demographic Surveillance System. AMMP has been the only source of information about Burden of Disease in three districts in Tanzania. The Burden of Disease (BoD) refers to a comprehensive assessment of mortality and disability from all causes, including diseases, injuries, and risk factors.

From HMIS and AMMP the paper will document more details on the following areas:

  • Background of the system. At this juncture the paper will dwell on the situation analysis before the introduction of HMIS and AMMP
  • Rationale for introducing HMIS and AMMP
  • Methodology of data collection through HMIS and AMMP
  • Data Analysis and dissemination of information. To different customers.
  • Demonstration of processed data on mortality, morbidity and some management indicators will presented
  • Success of the systems
  • Problems
  • Future plans
  • Conclusion
