As the South African Government works towards full implementation of the country’s eHealth Strategy 2012–2016, MEASURE Evaluation Strategic Information for South Africa (MEval-SIFSA) is providing technical assistance to enhance the capacity of the Department of Health (DoH) towards this end.
The project has been providing significant input on foundational elements of the system such as facility coding and patient identification, both of which provide information on where services are being delivered and who is receiving health services. We also are providing technical assistance to build capacity among development partners and health professionals to exchange and combine data from multiple health programmes into an eHealth system. All of the data, when combined, have the potential to paint a current and robust picture of the state of public health in South Africa.
MEval-SIFSA is producing information products on models for ongoing localisation and coordination of eHealth standards, privacy and security considerations in implementing an eHealth strategy, good practices for the implementation and management of a master patient index, and alignment of paper-based documents and forms with eHealth standards. It is intended that these thought pieces can be a meaningful contribution to the work of the eHealth Standards Authority, within the national DoH that will be guiding this effort.
