Child Status Index Tool Regional Conference

Workshop context

The Child Status Index (CSI) tool was developed in 2006/07 as a simple tool for assessing and monitoring the well-being of orphans and vulnerable children. This multidimensional and inexpensive way of collecting child outcome data has helped in providing a quick assessment of the program efforts towards making a measurable difference in childrens' lives. Since the tool was developed it has been adapted and used in different countries and by several organizations to monitor child well-being. However, there has been no way or forum to gather the evidence on how it is being used and how well it is working. This workshop will help bring together these patchy field experiences and provide better understanding of the CSI tool from different contexts for better implementation and use of it.

The conference sessions will provide information on the implementation procedures of the CSI tool by an organization and/or national government to monitor and evaluate programs for orphans and other vulnerable children.

Current use of the CSI tool is to establish uniform procedures pertaining to the preparation for, the collecting, and reporting data on key measures of child well-being for orphans and other vulnerable children. Download draft CSI tool below.

This workshop will aim at making certain the CSI tool is implemented properly and consistently by all field users to collect data and help in ensuring credibility, accuracy, and quality of information gathered about children.

Conference Objectives

• Provide a forum to share lessons learned to-date from implementing the CSI tool in the field to assess child well-being and in program monitoring.
• Promote collaborations among organizations to identify effective methods of integrating the CSI tool in their national OVC/M&E systems.
• Acquire new skills and best practices for using the CSI tool to assess child well-being at child and higher levels (project, national, etc.).
• Develop consensus on the generic steps for training volunteers to collect the CSI data, data flow and databases, analysis, and information use for program decisions.
• Discuss way forward of the CSI tool implementation.

Who Should Attend

Service providers to orphans and vulnerable children: monitoring and evaluation staff; program managers; consultants; anyone who has used, is using, and/or is planning to use the CSI tool to monitor and evaluate child well-being.

The planning committee has designed this workshop around the various levels of M&E and CSI use expertise in mind. Conference sessions will provide a forum for information exchange and support to enhance participant’s M&E skills with a focus on the CSI tool.

Sponsorship

MEASURE Evaluation will fund 12 conference participants based on demonstrated need and influence in advancing CSI in their country. Those requesting sponsorship are asked to complete an application no later than February 5, 2009.
