Virtual Community of Practice Seminar Reaches Users Worldwide

More than 300 participants from the public health sector, civil society, and training/research institutions posted comments during a MEASURE Evaluation five-day on-line seminar designed to improve monitoring and evaluation (M&E) skills.

The seminar’s goal was to improve and strengthen the planning, quality, relevance, and impact of organizational capacity-building interventions that target M&E units in organizations implementing HIV and AIDS and other health programs. Entitled Building Sustainable Organizational Capacity to Strengthen Monitoring and Evaluation Practice for Public Sector, NGO, and Civil Society Organizations, the seminar was conducted from January 30 to February 3, 2012. 

Using the LeaderNet platform developed by Management Sciences for Health, a member of the MEASURE Evaluation team, the seminar enabled individuals interested in M&E to come together and exchange information and ideas with fellow practitioners from all over the world. Participant evaluations indicated that many of them found the seminar relevant to their work and that it helped them identify factors that create an enabling organizational environment for M&E. Participants’ plans for how to use lessons learned include focusing on M&E through both raising general awareness of M&E within their organizations as well as developing organizational-specific activities to improve capacity building for M&E.

Participants also had suggestions to improve future seminars, which include facilitators sharing their own challenges faced within their work and holding more frequent seminars.
