M&E of Public Health Programs Workshop

This M&E of Public Health Programs Workshop will be held in Ile Ife, Nigeria from August 6-17, 2012.

Monitoring and evaluation (M&E) skills are fundamental to the process of designing and implementing programs, analyzing and using data, and conducting advocacy for population and health programs. In order to build the capacity of M&E professionals who are actively engaged in the health sector, a two-week non-degree course will provide training in M&E systems and the application of M&E data to decision making in population and health programming. The workshop will take place August 6-17 in Ile Ife, Nigeria.

Applications must be submitted by July 6, 2012.

At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Identify decisions related to population and health programs that can be informed by M&E results
  • Formulate questions that need to be answered in order to make informed decisions
  • Develop realistic, useful and targeted goals and objectives
  • Understand and be able to select indicators appropriate for a given program
  • Understand information systems and the flow of data
  • Understand data quality and its role in M&E
  • Disseminate and use M&E information strategically
  • Use STATA statistical software
  • Develop an M&E plan
  • Have basic understanding in the use of GIS in M&E

The workshop offers intensive training that will cover the fundamental concepts and tools for M&E in population and health programs.

The workshop will include sessions on: 

  • The role of strategic information in decision making
  • M&E frameworks 
  • Developing M&E plans and facilitating the use of strategic information
  • Indicator selection and interpretation
  • Data demand and information use
  • Assessment of data quality
  • Gender issues in M&E 
  • Use of STATA software for data analysis
  • Introduction to GIS in M&E

Hands-on experience in designing M&E plans will be gained by doing exercises, and working in small groups throughout the workshop. The participant groups will present the results of their projects on the final day of the workshop.

The course is designed for national and sub-national level M&E professionals and their counterparts, assistants and advisors who are involved with the implementation of population, reproductive health, HIV/AIDS, malaria, TB and other social sector programs. 

Applicants should be proficient in English, have current responsibilities for developing program monitoring plans and/or evaluation programs, and have some analytical skills.
