MEASURE Evaluation–Strategic Information for South Africa (MEval-SIFSA) is providing technical assistance to help national and provincial Departments of Health (DOH) implement standards-based service desks to support the South African District Health Management Information System (DHMIS).

The DOH DHMIS policy calls for the establishment of such helpdesks to provide information and support for routine health information systems (RHIS) used by the public health system, including creation of a knowledge base and continuous improvement processes.

MEval-SIFSA technical assistance will enable the DOH to increase knowledge and capacity among users of RHIS, which compiles population-based data on health outcomes, such as mortality and morbidity among mothers and young children, malaria prevalence, and other health issues in order to inform health programmes and policies. These improvements will contribute to strengthening the information base for the country’s health information system (HIS) and thereby contribute to better health policy and improved services.

MEval-SIFSA’s technical assistance also includes the development of standard operating procedures to help institute good practices. The diagram below shows the approach being employed towards implementation of this activity.
